University newspaper confirms detainment of Iranian national with student visa
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a doctoral student from the University of Alabama in the U.S. on a student visa. The Department of Homeland Security alleged the Iranian national represented “significant national security concerns.”
“The University of Alabama recently learned that a doctoral student has been detained off campus by federal immigration authorities. Federal privacy laws limit what can be shared about an individual student,” the university stated.
The arrested student was identified by the university’s student newspaper, as Iranian national Alireza Doroudi. The charges against him have not been made public but other students ICE has previously arrested were connected to pro-Palestinian protests. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that any support for terrorist groups is grounds for visas to be revoked.
